THREADS OF RHYTHM
Dancer & choreographer name: Ketaki Sathe
Musician name: Hengameh Ehia
Music: Live music ( Hengameh and Ketaki)
As a Kathak dancer and teacher, I wanted to explore the aesthetics of Kathak through the lens of global musical traditions. I met Hana, a Persian drummer and teacher, and a question wouldn’t leave my mind: what would Kathak sound like if it danced to Persian drums? That single question set everything in motion- and that is how this idea was born.
This work brings Kathak into dialogue with the Tombak, the classical Persian drum. Through intricate footwork, gesture, and rhythmic play, the dance engages with the textures and improvisational spirit of Persian music.
The piece culminates in a Jugalbandi—a musical conversation rather than a competition—in which dancer and musician take turns leading, responding, challenging, and complementing one another. Rooted in mutual listening and exchange, the work celebrates rhythm as a shared language that transcends cultural boundaries.
